Garfield Gets a New Baseball Field

But where is the softball field?

Construction is under way at the playfield just north of Garfield, the future home turf for our bulldog baseball team. The softball team, on the other hand, has no future home turf except Bobby Morris playfield.

Joe Lucia, head coach and father of senior captain Joseph Lucia, has been working for years to get a high quality field at Garfield, and his work has finally paid off.  The field renovation will include a new mound, along with all new sand, making the field look much better than it did before.

With many girls arguing that the Lady Bulldogs deserve a field as well, I decided to take a dive into the topic to find out what was really going on underneath the surface.

The first bit of information I learned was that the girls have been playing at Garfield for some time, but the field is of terrible quality.

“If it rains the night before, you can’t play on it the next day because it is too muddy,” says sophomore Emma Giles.

The Lady Bulldogs have had to deal with a subpar field for years.  Now the boys get a brand new field, when they were playing at Bobby Morris, a perfectly good field.

However, the girls will move their home games to Bobby Morris, and are expecting a new field to come soon, but the chances are slim.

Junior Maddie Lee states, “I hate how softball is always pushed aside.”

Year after year, countless games are cancelled because of field conditions, which creates an unpredictable schedule for the Lady Bulldogs.

The boys team had problems playing at Bobby Morris.

“Although it is turf and a nice field, it was a journey to get to if one did not have a car,” says Hank Droege, who was a pitcher on varsity as a freshman and has yet to obtain his driver’s license.

This made it difficult for underclassmen on varsity to deal with the travels, having to take two busses, and walking a couple blocks.

The problem now is that the girls team will have to go through this process.

The truth is that the turf was donated, so Garfield is not actually paying any money for the field renovation.

The boys team may be good for more than just baseball, however.

“Although the girls have their fair share of talent and beauty, we are probably the best looking team among all spring sports,” says Droege.

The softball girls pulled the short straw on this one, but are still looking forward to a successful season. Hopefully both teams will benefit from a new field in the future.
