Lucky Number ’13?

Large numbers of small freshmen on varsity fall sports teams

Freshmen are the babies of the school and in general have no authority whatsoever. But much like the lemming of Northern Norway, they are cute, yet deadly in numbers. With such a large turnout from the class of ’013, a few of them were bound to make the varsity squad. That being said, there are some outstanding young athletes that walk the halls of Garfield each and every day. These are just a few of the newest prospects.

Girls Swimming and Diving

Yes, girls swimming has shown a certain amount of talent over the years with several state berths and a few titles, but the diving team never seemed exceptional. Freshman Caitlin Chambers has a thing or two to say about that. Graduate of Washington Middle School, Chambers lived in New Zealand as a child and dove for the New Zealand national team. Say whaaa? Garfield’s very own member of the class of 2013 is taking the KingCo Metro league by storm, introducing the bounce of a kangaroo and fierceness of a Tasmanian devil to the Garfield Bulldogs from the land down under.

Cross Country

Although the line between JV and varsity is somewhat blurred on cross country, incoming freshmen Ariel Loud is definitely at the top of the pack. With a mile time of 5:04 and a two mile time of only 10:46, Loud is already miles ahead of the competition. Having never run competitively before, Loud has nowhere to go from here but up.

Girls Soccer

Caroline Sheffield, Ava Lewis, and Jane Markman are all new additions to the varsity roster of the girls soccer team this fall. Maybe these three will be the little kick the dogs need to make it to playoffs for the first time in two years. All members of the club team Emerald City, Markman attended TOPS while Lewis and Sheffield both came through Washington. Lewis has been a big addition to the team, scoring big in overtime last week in a match versus Lake Washington. Sheffield is a pint-sized deadly combination of speed and surprise.

“My big sister Tory is my biggest inspiration,” she said.

Don’t worry, she’s not so nice on the soccer field.

Football

Hayes Gorecki walked on to the Garfield team this fall and managed to secure the spot at second string quarterback. Much like his superior, the Sean Foster, Gorecki has lots of promise at a young age, in more ways than one…

Volleyball

With the addition of two freshmen phenoms by the names of Sophia Black and Bekah Louie, the vollydog squad is looking to improve on last year’s one-win season and make the playoffs. With enough hard work and dedication they just might be able to pull it off.

Boys Tennis

Although there are technically no freshmen representing 2013 in actual matches, Jack Petersen and Andrew Schwartz were both asked to practice with varsity in preparation for next year when nearly half the squad will have graduated. Petersen has played on a neighborhood team for five years while Schwartz was taught growing up by his big brother Danny. Hopefully with this strategic move, the boys tennis team will be able to continue their three season win streak into next year.
