There are several ways to get into college. The first, and most difficult, is simply to take the hardest classes and make the best grades.
For this next select group of people, they are off to a university because of a deadly combination of hard work and god-given talent. These athletes don’t apply to colleges, colleges apply to them. In fact, Garfield had its fair share of recruitments this year with star players headed all across the country.
Deandre Coleman
There was no question in any Bulldog’s mind that this number one defensive tackle in the state of Washington is going to do big things. After signing with University of Washington in the fall under coach Tyrone Willingham, Biggie broke his contract when it was announced that Willingham would not be coaching the Huskies next fall. Instead, he will be playing for the University of California at Berkeley. It was a tough decision, though, considering the other schools including UW and UCLA that showed interest.
“[The others were] UW clearly, UCLA, and LSU,” said Biggie.
Melissa Oishi
Next fall, Oishi will find herself in the Big Easy, swimming for the University of New Orleans. She had been in contact with plenty of other schools like University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), Brown, and Johns Hopkins. In November, she made the decision to sign on as a UNO Privateer.
Anthony Johnson
Track superstar Anthony Johnson, better known as AJ, is being recruited right and left from colleges all over the country. We have all seen his letter from Princeton hanging on the “I Didn’t Want to Go There Anyway” wall, but he seems to want to stay a little closer to home. His top choice at the moment is Eastern Washington University which boasts the best track program in the Big Sky Conference. However, East Carolina and Lipscomb University in Tennessee are also on his short list. But AJ, unlike others, has not committed yet.
Carl Majeau
Combining his 4.0 and 6039756 AP classes with his jazz playing and swimming ability, Majeau was a hot item for colleges. After filling out recruitment forms for numerous prestigious universities, Columbia and Harvey Mudd are at the top of the list and at the moment Majeau is leaning towards Columbia but has until May 1st to commit. Either way he swings, Majeau is sure to get a stellar education with some swimming on the side.
