In the last four seasons Garfield football has only won a total of three games. It may come as a surprise, then, that out of this program has come the number one defensive tackle recruit in the state.
At an intimidating 6 feet 4 inches and 295 pounds Deandre Coleman, better known as Biggie, is a menace on the football field. About a month ago, Coleman verbally committed to University of Washington’s coach Tyrone Willingham to play defensive tackle for the Huskies. He turned down offers from other top schools including Oregon and the 2007 BCS champions Louisiana State University. Coleman said he was interested in University of California at Berkley as well but settled on UW.
“It’s close to home and I like the coach,” Coleman said.
As one could probably imagine, competing against Coleman is no walk in the park. Coleman’s strength, size, and ability all contribute to his rank of number one in the state.
“I’ll admit it’s a little scary knowing that there is a six-four three-hundred pound guy trying to tackle you,” said Sean Foster, Garfield starting Quarterback. “He’s real big.”
After a disappointing yet improved last season, the team is hopeful this year. They took on rival Franklin on Saturday in the season opener.
“We’re going to state this year,” Coleman guaranteed. “The team is really coming together and playing well.”
These may be some big dreams for Biggie, but he also has some big plans for after college. The NFL is certainly a possibility, according to Coleman. For now, Coleman is taking the limelight in stride, and simply enjoying being the top recruit in the state.
“It feels good,” he smiles.
