Garfield’s Lady Bullfrogs have just completed a perfect season going 10 – 0 beating the likes of Ballard and Inglemoor.
“Going undefeated…I guess it’s good but totally unexpected,” said senior captain Gabby Guieb.
On September 28th the Lady Bullfrogs faced the three time defending state champion Inglemoor Vikings.
“Other swimmers and myself weren’t sure if we could pull this one out,” said senior captain Alexandra Ernst.
To the Bullfrogs’ surprise, they ended up shocking fans by upsetting the Vikings.
“After winning the first two matches our confidence began to grow gradually, then we just exploded,” said Ernst.
Soon after beating Inglemoor, the Bullfrogs found themselves rooting for Inglemoor in hopes of beating Ballard, so the Bullfrogs could claim they beat the best team in the state.
To the surprise of the Bullfrogs, Inglemoor was once again defeated, creating what was later dubbed “The Homecoming Showdown” by head coach Emily Weber: undefeated Garfield versus undefeated Ballard.
October 19th, homecoming day, it came down to sink or swim for the Bullfrogs and the Beavers, and with a new found confidence after beating Inglemoor the Bullfrogs were definitely ready to swim towards victory. Since this was a battle of two undefeated teams, one would expect a large crowd of Bulldog fans and supporters, but not the Lady Bullfrogs who never expect a big crowd.
“In my four years at Garfield I’ve never seen any sort of a Garfield crowd at our swim meets.” Said Ernest, “My parents are the only crowd I’m used to seeing, everyone else goes to the football game on homecoming night,” said Guieb.
Surprising to the Lady Bullfrogs, the biggest crowd of fans and supporters that any of the swimmers had seen at a swim meet showed up.
“I was very pleased,” said Coach Weber “seeing that many amount of people astounded me. The crowd made the matches more intense, all the girls were excited to do their best and thanks to the support, the girls raced the best I’ve ever seen them race.”
The swimmers were thankful of the fans as well.
“All that support really gave me a boost; it was something I’ve never felt before,” said Guieb.
Now that the Bullfrogs have beaten their two toughest opponents Ballard and Inglemoor, they look towards the future which is districts, and eventually state.
“Qualifying for districts and state isn’t easy, you have to be a fast swim team, which we are,” said Coach Emily Weber.
The Lady Bullfrogs find themselves drenched in goals and striving to achieve, whether it is qualifying for districts and then state, having fun, or defending their position as the best swim team in the state by placing 1st in state competition. Coach Weber, who has been coaching the girls swim team for the past four years, really wants to win it all.
“I would love to win state, after placing third in last year’s state competition which is good to an onlooker but disappointing to us a team,” said Weber. “We’re better than that, I want this.”
Coach Weber explains that she likes taking the laid back approach when coaching, to take the strain off of her speedy swimmers.
“My girls not only swim for the school but also for their own individual swim clubs,” said Weber. “That is the equivalent of two practices for them, so they don’t need too much pushing, but I will push them to strive towards their best.”
The Lady Bullfrogs do not solely depend on their coach for emotional motivation, but also motivate themselves.
“We all want to win, no one wants to let their teammates down, and there is just a great vibe in the locker room,” said senior Caitlin Anderson.
With a very confident coach in Coach Weber and great swimmers such as Gabby Guieb, Alexandra Ernst, Melissa Oishi, Maddy Morgan, expect the Lady Bullfrogs to sail their way past competition in districts, and ship in state championship hardware.
