A disappointing season ends badly for Garfield’s football team

As fall begins to fade to those long, dark, and occasionally dank winter nights, Garfield students begin to turn their attention to the high prospect winter sports, while fall sports become more and more a fading memory for some, while a concluded nightmare for others.

In our day and age, the Bulldog student body is quick to pop-off a joke about our football team. It’s just another losing season in which even low expectations were not met and fans continued to remain sparse. But so what if the team went a combined 1 – 8, was shut out in numerous games, and week in and week out got blown out by 30 points, and 48 by Bothell. People are missing the point, which is that for the first time in a long time, they did not finish dead last in the Kingco 4A standings. That honor went to Lake Washington this year who finished 0 – 9.

Senior defensive end Tom Plunkett says that, “this season their were many, many, low points when we all wanted to just throw in the hat, but then again their were just those couple of high points which were probably the greatest feeling’s that ive ever had, and made it all worth it. I encourage kids to come out next year both to play on and support the team from the stands.”

However, the record of 1 – 8 is not totally the football team’s fault, as inevitable events occurred beyond the ability of anybody’s control. Even for a football team, an exceptional amount of players were hurt. Against cross town rival Franklin, almost half of the starting line-up was benched due to injuries after the third quarter. At one point in the game, Coach Allen was forced to put in his fifth string running back because the rest were not fit for the field.

Team captain senior Caleb Hecker sums up the season in one sentence when he says that, “were all disappointed, and we got real unlucky with all the injuries and everything, but it just seems like it wasn’t God’s will for us to do good this season, it’s just all part of his plan man, and you just got to go along with the flow.”

Looking back on this season, not much has changed from years passed. The team is still finding ways to lose, key players are still getting hurt, and they are still beating more people up off the field then on.

But on the bright side, there is hope for the future. With up and coming stars such as Deandre Coleman, T’andre Jones, Warren Tia Tia, and Sean Foster, the team shows some promise for next year.

Once again, the expectations will be high, which is only reasonable after a horrid season, but time can only tell what the future holds. But until then, we can all start to look forward to the boys basketball season.
