The girls’ swim team is fast. Really fast. The Lady Bullfrogs are led by talents such as seniors Rebecca Young and Gabby Guieb, and are expected to take their swimming skills to new heights this season. Guieb participates in (and usually wins) numerous events each meet, yet sees herself as a team player and denies her role as the “star of the girls swim team.”

“I’m not the only swimmer on the team, though swimming can be individual sport when you’re racing against the clock,” said Guieb. “Here at Garfield, swimming is team-oriented. Expect other key swimmers such as Maddy Morgan, Rebecca Young, Alexandra Ernst, and Erica Casarotto to make Garfield’s girls’ swim team better.”

Guieb names placing 1st or 2nd at this year’s state championships, swimming faster than last season, and beating rival schools such as Roosevelt and Ballard as the Bulldogs’ goals for the year. Their only threat so far? The Inglemoor Vikings, who seem to be the Bullfrogs’ toughest opponent. Both Young and Guieb believe this is the swim team to beat, and with the help of the relaxed coaching style of head coach Emily Weber, they are feeling more than ready.

“We are more focused, we have more members, and we take our training very seriously,” said Young.

The Lady Bullfrogs have taken their training so seriously that swimmers not only report to Garfield practices but also to swim club practices to perfect their strokes. “Expect our 100– and 200-meter relay teams to dominate,” said Young. Both Young and Guieb race in these events.

After drowning Eastlake by a score of 113 to 43 in their first swim meet of the season, expectations are high for the rest of the year. The Lady Bullfrogs are set to stay on the calm seas that lead to the state championships, while other schools such as Franklin struggle to stay afloat.
