Many people scoff at those who play golf, saying that golf is easy, that it is just hitting a little white ball with a stick. The reality is that it takes precision, technique and concentration beyond the reaches of an amateur. Junior Jordon Giese is no amateur.

“This is my first time seeing Jordon,” coach Peller Phillips said. “I was really impressed with his ability on the golf course.”

Giese does have some background in the game. He has been playing for four years after being introduced to the game by his uncles. The challenge of the game appeals to Giese because he likes to take on new challenges.

“It’s the most challenging game there is,” Giese said. “Nothing is ever easy.”

Enjoyment of the game keeps Giese constantly trying to improve his game. The best part of his game right now is his approach shots, which is any shot where you try to put the ball on the green. Putting has been the part of his game that Giese has been working on most recently.

Despite being a junior, this is Giese’s first year playing for the Garfield team. One reason he has not decided to join earlier is his commitment to soccer, which he has played since fifth grade. He is now on a year-round soccer team.

What most impresses Phillips about Giese is his character. Phillips sees Giese as a potential leader as well as one of the top players this year.

“He’s not arrogant,” Phillips said. “He’s actually a pretty quiet kid.”

Giese is enjoying his experience so far as part of the team. He especially enjoys betting by hole with teammates and being able to play every day.

Next year, Giese should continue to be a key player on the golf team and will have a good chance of going to state. Following high school, Giese would like to attend the University of Santa Barbara. He hopes to continue to play golf there, possibly on the collegiate team.

For now, Giese is one of the top players on the Garfield golf team. He will do well this year, most likely placing in the district tournament at the end of the season. His addition will bring nothing but good things for the team.
