To many, running is a mundane chore on the way to greatness in other ventures of athletic prowess. To these ambitious women, however, it means so much more.
The girls’ cross country team returned only junior Naomi Hummel and senior Ruth Crabtree from last year’s small squad of five, but has five new runners who should boost the team.
“A few of [the new runners] seem strong,” said coach Annie Hobbs. “Keeping the team healthy is now the key.”
The backbone of the team is captain Naomi Hummel. She is the key returning runner from last year’s squad and is only getting better. She is looking to lower her time of 21 minutes from last year.
Hummel is optimistic about the coming year and her new teammates. Her biggest goal for the team is to put in their best effort.
“I want everyone to go to practice every day and work hard,” Hummel said. “That is the biggest challenge to overcome.”
In order to become competitive, this team will have to turn its potential talent into actual ability through hard work and discipline. Cross country requires a level of fitness that these girls will be able to attain as long as they keep themselves and each other motivated throughout the entire year.
“Half the people who see us are in awe.” said Hummel. “The other half say ‘you’re weird.’”
The team shows a camaraderie not seen in most other sports. The fact that it is a lot of work to be on the team facilitates the closeness that the team has. Their unity is one of the biggest strengths of this team.
“It’s true there is a lot of running,” coach Hobbs said. “There are also a lot of friendships that get built.”
The most disappointing thing about this year’s squad is the lack of underclassmen. Hobbs conceded the need for freshmen is rising every year and she is disappointed that there was not a better underclassmen turnout.
The small team size has not affected the drive of the individuals. All are committing to working hard in pursuit of improving. This year has been designated as a rebuilding year, but don’t be surprised if great accomplishments come from this team.
