Ya Smell Me?
A search for the truth about pheromones and cologne

Since the dawn of man, Homo sapiens males have tried everything in the playbook to snag that perfect mate. And for some of us, the odds just haven’t been in our favor lately. Survival of the fittest worked out for a while, as did writing love letters and dedicating songs to that special someone, but eventually the species had to find a more sure-fire method.
After a long ordeal of trying everything from painting her face over the Mona Lisa’s to visiting the school nurse because I’m too lovesick, I arrived at the combination of cologne and pheromones.
“Are you looking for an easier way to attract more women? Well recent science may have discovered why some guys just have better natural chemistry with women,” said the scantily clad girl on Pherlure.com.
She went on to explain how pheromones are chemicals that are naturally emitted by both male and female hormones and are used to communicate with other members of the same species. She stated that a high concentration of the pheromones involved in attraction can be found in human sweat, citing a study from Web MD.
After being discovered and tested in the last few decades, these often-odorless chemicals are now being mixed in with certain colognes or sold undiluted, giving us the possible miracle of courtship.
Junior Charlie Philips isn’t sold on the idea though.”We don’t choose our mate solely by their scent. There’s so many other much more important factors than a few chemicals in some cologne,” said Philips.
Sophomore Hannah LeBlanc, on the other hand, has a little more faith in the power of scent.
“Well the sweat gives off the athletic guy vibe, you know?” said LeBlanc, “but the sweat marks on the shirt aren’t too hot.”
Both opinions may be valid in some cases, but the trend isn’t restricted to just men’s cologne, as Pherlure.com also totes a selection of perfumes. Both products contain the appropriate chemicals to command the attention and interest of the opposite sex. Currently there aren’t any pheromone products being sold in major stores. Philosophy Cosmetics made a scent called “Pheromone” which was sold in stores such as Sephora, but was discontinued a few years ago. Still, though, there is a plethora of websites like pheromonesguru.com, which sells a copious variety of fragrances, from “Scent of Eros” to “Alpha 7.”
Junior Jack Yates, however, is skeptical of cologne in general. “It’s not the cologne on the man,” said Yates. “It’s the man wearing it.”
I’ve never before been a cologne-wearing man, but my ascent to join the great-smelling people of the world is soon to come. Remaining hopeful in spite of the Debby Downers of the world, I plan to pursue the Holy Grail of attraction, and get myself a bottle of pheromonesguru’s “Primal Instinct” as soon as possible.
