Thank God Hugh Grant has finally found the role for which he was destined: the complete a**hole. In About a Boy, Grant portrays Will, a vain and trendy Londoner who, thanks to his dad’s timelessly catchy Christmas song, doesn’t have to work. Instead, Will spends his “island life” shopping and looking for casual sex.
With his newest brilliant strategy, Will preys on insecure single “mums” by inventing a son and joining S.P.A.T, a single parent support group. But Will gets more than he bargained for when a suicidal woman and hopelessly dorky son, Marcus, become emotionally attached to him. Over the course of the movie, Will’s existence is redeemed, as he is forced to learn the values of life the hard way. Based on the book by Nick Hornby, About a Boy is an uplifting and hilarious story, and was one of my favorite movies of 2002.
