About Us
The Garfield Messenger is a student-run newspaper at Garfield High School in Seattle, Washington. The paper has been a part of Garfield since 1922, and currently has 40 students on staff with one faculty adviser. A 24– to 32-page paper is printed approximately twice a month, a yearly total of 14 issues. The paper supports itself primarily by subscriptions; approximately 300 families subscribe each year. Additional income is gained from fundraising and the sale of advertisements. The paper not only reaches subscribers, but also the 1,800 students that attend Garfield, as well as faculty, the families of students, and friends.
Staff members are selected through an application and interview process, conducted every semester. Students are encouraged to enroll in the Beginning Journalism course before applying to become staff.
